Jonathan H. Marler
Managing Partner
Jonathan Marler is a renowned lawyer and the Managing Partner of Marler Law Firm, located in Oakville, Ontario. He began his academic journey by earning a B.A. in English Literature from Bishop’s University, in Lennoxville, Quebec in 1970. In the same year, he became the John Bassett Memorial Scholar in Law at the University of New Brunswick, where he later earned his law degree.
In 1973, Jonathan was called to the Bar of New Brunswick, and he articled with James Dufferin Harper, Q.C. in the same province. He moved to Toronto, Ontario, where he articled with David G. Humphrey, Q.C., who later became the Honorable Mr. Justice Harper of the Superior Court of Justice. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1975 and has since then been engaged in a litigation practice, representing various clients, both personal and corporate, in many areas of the law.
Jonathan opened the Marler Law Firm in Oakville in 2006, where he and his team offer a wide range of legal services. The firm’s approach is to provide cost-effective solutions for clients while maintaining a respectful approach to those clients and opposing parties and their lawyers.
Jonathan is known for his problem-solving approach to the practice of law, which he shares with his young associates, law students, and high-school co-op students, hoping to help them achieve careers that are as rewarding as his own. He firmly believes in helping clients move forward with their lives, regardless of the legal disputes they face, which requires a practical and common-sense approach. His approach was accurately described by a former student and associate, who now refers to Jonathan as his mentor, as follows:
In the practice of law, I have tried to follow two basic rules. First: solve the problem – do not add to it. My mentor, when I started to practice always referred to himself, not as a lawyer, but as a problem solver. I always follow that mantra and focus on pursuing solutions to the problem I am asked to address. I adopt that approach to all my cases. Although, if a fight is unavoidable, I am quite prepared and willing to engage in one, as my curriculum vitae demonstrates. Second: help people move forward with their lives. Whether someone is buying a home, developing a business, separating from a spouse, administering an estate, resolving an issue with an employee or an employer or caught up in any other kind of conflict, I encourage my client to look to the future and not be stuck in the quicksand of legal disputes. That means moving forward, looking for solutions and not engaging in grudge matches: a reasonable and cost-effective solution requires a practical and common-sense approach.
At Marler Law Firm, the hourly rate for legal support services ranges from $200 to $600 per hour, depending on the experience of the lawyer involve, and the firms offers flat-rate fees and/or contingency-fee agreements for some files.
Jonathan recognizes that the legal system can be complex, frustrating, and sometimes intimidating for clients. As such, Jonathan and his team of associates work diligently to unravel the legal difficulties faced by their clients from their first meeting in a no-obligation, no-fee consultation.
